Many children in high risk communities struggle to succeed in school and life due to a variety of factors including: low income, lack of support, poor goal setting skills, lack of structure, lack of food, low self esteem, unstable environment, violence in the home or neighborhood, etc. While all of us are susceptible to hard times, children in high risk settings are one of the largest groups “at risk” to fail because of the impact their immediate environment has on them. This is how the concept of Rebecca’s Garden of Hope, Inc. Tutoring & Mentoring Program began and has evolved. Our holistic approach places emphasis on the mind, body, and spirit of each child. We nurture children with love and encourage them to build on a foundation of Christ to give them strength as they move through this journey called life.
Rebecca’s Garden of Hope, Inc. Tutoring & Mentoring Program, a non for profit 501 (c) (3) organization, was founded in Orlando, Florida by Sanya Parson from a grass roots effort and evolved after successfully developing a tutoring program at Our Savior Lutheran Church in 2007. Sanya and others recognized a need in the community and had a passion for empowering youth by helping them to understand that, through Christ, all things are possible.
Determined to make a difference, the founder and other supporters began canvassing the local neighborhoods, inviting children to attend the newly formed tutoring and mentoring program. Children were encouraged to stay after tutoring to attend a youth Bible Study. These children were also fed dinner during the session. The numbers have continued to grow to about 40-50 active participating youth. Today these children are being tutored in reading, grammar and math with some receiving extra support on Saturday morning. The tutoring program has recently added a computer lab, using donated computers which help to enhance the learning experience for our youth. Additionally, children are also given unique tools to help them manage money and incorporate effective life skills. They are fed a nutritional hot meal, and they participate in exciting Bible games.
Train a child in the way they should go and even when they are old they will not turn away from it. Proverbs 22:6
